Dedicated linux servers
For software-developers and website builders
In the webhosting industry Linux is still the preferred operating system, and is used on 70% of all dedicated servers. The reason for it's popularity is that Linux dedicated servers are much easier to maintain than other operating systems. Accordingly, Flexservers offers two Linux flavors (CentOS and Debian) that suit both the needs and demands of professional users.
CentOS
CentOS (The Community ENTerprise Operating System) is actually a open source version of the commercial OS Redhat Enterprise. This Linux operation system (OS) is fully based on the open source SRPMS that Redhat has made available and makes CentOS completely binary compatible with Redhat. The advantages of CentOS compared to other Linux distributions are:
- Best OS to use in combination with Virtuozzo and Plesk
- Driven by an active developer and user community
- Security updates and patches are available frequently and easily
- Compared to an OS such as Fedora, CentOS has a long life-cycle, so reducing the amount of necessary OS migrations
Debian
Debian is named after it's founders - DEBra en IAN Murdock. Debian is built on a original Linux kernel and uses additional tools from the GNU project. System-engineers prefer Debian as server operating system for the following reasons:
- It's user friendly
- Free (under GNU licenses)
- It's a very stable OS
- Easy to customize
- Good support
Currently, Flexservers supplies its servers with CentOS 5.2 or Debian 5.0. This way all dedicated Linux servers are equipped with PHP 5 en MySQL 5. More information on virtual servers with CentOS or Debian can be found here.
